Climate change is a bipartisan issue

Many people view climate change as a partisan issue. A new proposed resolution in the House of Representatives dispels that notion. This bipartisan resolution, introduced by two Republicans and two Democrats, acknowledges the impact that climate change is having on outdoor recreation and to support policies that address the problem.

The resolution points out, “The outdoor recreation economy generates $887 trillion in consumer spending annually and supports 7.6 million jobs in the United States.” It goes on to acknowledge Earth’s rising temperatures, which are “resulting in rising ocean temperatures, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, dramatic glacier melt, shorter winter seasons, reduced snowpack, and an increase in extreme weather in the United States.”

One of the sponsors, Mia Love (R-Utah), points to the economic activity in her state due to natural resources. She stated, “Utah is a world-renowned hub of outdoor recreation, attracting visitors from across the world seeking to enjoy the natural beauty it offers. As someone who enjoys outdoor activities, I strongly believe we must be good stewards of the natural resources we enjoy. As a lawmaker and member of the Climate Solutions Caucus, I’m proud to support policies that reflect these principles.”

If adopted, the resolution would signal the House’s support for federal, state and local policies to address climate change while “supporting urban and rural populations, sustaining tourism- focused communities, and growing the economy of the United States.”

I ask Rep. Scott Tipton to protect Colorado’s outdoor recreation economy by joining the Climate Solutions Caucus and supporting the resolution.
